Mr. Sashimi hates me

I noticed Mr. Sashimi’s swollen lips about 2 weeks ago. Ok, it was more like raw and swollen looking. At first, I and the huge grizzly bear thought it was raw scratch from Mr. Sushi’s aggressive kicking during their numerous play fights. We observed it daily and it seemed like getting better, so we didn’t think of it too much.

A week passed by and we realized that we were fooling ourselves by believing it was getting better because it wasn’t. Then last Thursday, the huge grizzly bear noticed Mr. Sashimi’s inner ears was black. You know the tell tale signs of ear mites. His left ear was full of it. The black ground coffee like substance ear mites produce. I could not believe how I missed it until it got that bad.

So Mr. Sashimi had an unwanted trip to the vet on Saturday. I thought the ear mites and lip problem were not related. BUT the vet said it wasn’t ear mites. He has an ear infection and lip infection and they are related. Something is bothering him. I suggested if recently change cat food might be problem. No. I asked my unusual choice of litter (chicken feed) may be the problem. Highly unlikely.

Mr. Sashimi got a shot of steroid on his rump, and I was instructed to give him two pills and apply ointment on the infected area twice daily.

So right now, Mr. Sashimi hates me because I’m force feeding pills and putting on gooey sticky stuff inside his ears. He would not come near me (only when I sleep) and every time I get up, I only get to see his cute furry butt and tail hiding somewhere. At least, he doing so much better: the lips and ears are getting better by day!!

Water Bowl Situation

The white round bowl in the middle was the water bowl

The white round bowl in the middle was the water bowl

The location of watering hole is always the problem when you are living with 4 legged family members.

I always HAD this problem with Mr. Sashimi and Mr. Sushi. They were always provided the fresh water right next to their food bowls. But somehow they preferred to drink from somewhere else: that left over water in the mug/cup, dish water standing still in the soon to be cleaned dish and the toilet water (yeah, unlike many household rule, sit down, we had a rule of the cover down after the business).

Then one day this all changed.

I don’t know why, but one day I decided to put the water bowl away from the feed station: a few feet from the food bowls. The result were amazing!! Mr. Sashimi and Mr. Sushi started to drink from their own water bowl, not anywhere else.

To this day, I do not know the reasons behind their behavior change, but I’m so happy that I no longer have to yell at them because they are drinking from the cup/mug left on the countertop or from the toilet (I’m pretty sure its ok but I do not like it).

Update on Mr. Sushi’s Cold

Mr. Sushi’s been getting better steadily, so he didn’t have to visit the vet yesterday. Just like us human cold, there isn’t really a cure for the feline cold:  just have to let it run its course, about 7 to 10 days.

However, I found that adding Vitamin C to the cat food ease up the cold symptoms, so I ground up a Vitamin C pill and added to his food: just 1/4 teaspoonful per day. BTW, if your feline companion catches a cold, please do not give any human cold medications as they are mostly toxic to cats. Also, do not add Vitamin C to cat food for preventive measure. Only add Vitamin C to cat food if the cat catches cold and no more than 4 days.

When Mr. Sushi sneezed, I saw great deal of spayage and sometimes viscose nasal mucus fluid flying out: yes, I got them all on my face, and don’t worry as feline cold cannot be transferred to human. As for the viscose nasal mucus fluid, it is pretty safe to assume a common cold as long as it’s clear and watery. Of course, if still unsure, it’s best to visit a vet for check up. If the mucus is very thick or yellowish color or both, there’s definitely some kind of serious infection/inflammation going on and visiting the vet should be the top priority.

Mr. Sushi’s sneeze count decreased greatly and seem to suffer much less from the nasal congestion. He no longer feel hotter than he should be, and he’s about 70% of his usual crazy over-active self. One thing I also noticed, he seems to look for a warmer place to sleep.

Oh, no! Mr. Sushi caught a cold

Mr. Sushi’s been acting strange since yesterday. He was sneezing more than usual yesterday, but I didn’t pay much attention. However, the sneezing continued today and he’s just not his usual crazy over-active self. When he sneezes, I could see the spayage from his nose and mouth. He seems to suffer from nasal congestion as I see him breathing through his mouth often and hear this funny gurgling sound. Plus I actually saw Mr. Sushi making a small bubble with his nostril.

Right now he’s sleeping inside of Cat Tree tunnel for the first time in many years: Mr. Sushi and Mr. Sashimi never really liked the tunnel. He slept on me this evening for about 2 hours and I think he may be running a mild fever too. Of course, it’s my speculation as I think he felt hotter than usual. I just didn’t have the heart to check his body temperature: if you know, there’s only one sure way to measure it (anal probe to measure rectal temperature).

The weather in NYC has been unusually cool past couple of days: rainy, drizzly, dark cloudy and cool/cold at night. Mr. Sushi’s usual sleep spot is right below the living room window and I think he caught the cold breathing all that cold air coming through the window.

We will observe his condition one more day and will bring him to the vet if the condition doesn’t get any better. I really hope he gets better tomorrow because he really hates visiting the vet.

On 5/10 Sunday, I woke up to see Mr. Sashimi’s eyelids all red and swollen. Well, at first I didn’t notice in the house. But I went out with Mr. Sashimi and Mr. Sushi for early morning play out, I saw this raw red eyelids on Mr. Sashimi. I think it’s Mr. Sushi’s doing: rough play fight.

Both eyelids are all red, raw and swollen, but Mr. Sashimi appears to be in no pain or maybe minor annoyance. Now there’s some specks of scabs are forming.

Of course, right away Mr. Sushi’s claws are trimmed short. Ha!

Oh no! Mr. Sushi has an eye infection!!

Mr. Sushi has an eye infection. After exhaustive reseach, I concluded that it is most likely an pink eye or conjunctivitis. Of course, there is always good chance that my diagnosis is wrong, and that’s why we are going to bring him to a vet if it gets worse tomorrow.

squinty eye Mr. Sushi

squinty eye Mr. Sushi

I noticed it this evening. I was watching TV, my fave pose laying down on sofa, and Mr. Sushi was on my chest. That’s when I noticed greenish gooey discharge from his left eye. This morning, I noticed it, but thinking it was from his long night sleep, I just wiped it off with a tissue. However seeing that very thick green discharge up close and personal plus very obvious squintiness, I knew something was wrong. I said to the huge grizzly bear,

“Honey, I think Mr. Sushi has an eye infection.”

“I know, I told you about that yesterday.” *while playing a game on his blackberry*

“uh, when?”

“Yesterday, evening” *still playing the game on his blackberry*

“I don’t remember!”

“You were kinda sleeping.” *still enthusiastically playing the game on his blackberry*

“I was sleeping…?” “Yes, you were kinda sleeping…” “I can’t hear when I sleep…” “But you weren’t sleeping, just dozing off….” “But I don’t remember….” “You always don’t remember” ……yady yady yada

We didn’t fight. It’s just everyday stuff here. Anyway, I did some research and it seems like a feline form of conjunctivitis (red eye). I’ve been cleaning the gooey discharge with home-made saline solution. If it doesn’t get better by tomorrow evening, he’s gonna see a vet!!

Today is Mr. Sushi’s 3rd birthday. I know, I know, technically it is 3/4 Wednesday, but I feel like it is still 3/3 and I will feel this way until I sleep or see the crack of sun ray over the horizon.

Naturally, I again forgot to remember Mr. Sushi’s birthday today: I’m known to forget important days. I got a phone call from the huge grizzly bear around 4:30pm. The dialogue went something like this:

“You know today?”

“uhmmm (trying very hard to remeber what day it is)… yeah… I know… So what is it??”

“You don’t remember!!??”

“uhmmm….(still no idea…)… I know!  (trying very hard to remember any numbers: there’s a reason why Mr. Sushi’s B-day is 3/3 or 0303).

“So whatcha goona do??”

“well….(still in a haze)… I don’t know… whachu think??”

Then I rememebered it’s Mr. Sushi’s B-day.

So yes, it is Mr. Sushi’s 3rd birthday. He is still a young lad who is over- energetic, active, immature and crazy.

After learning that it is his b-day, I went on to make his b-day gift. I’m a practical gift giver. I always try to find something that can be used or useful, not just pretty objects. So here it  is.. what I made for Mr. Sushi’s 3rd birtday… sock capnip bags.
